Seidio Case & Holster Combo for the TyTNII

The Seidio Case and Holster combo is a great solution for the TyTNII... definitely one of the best I have used to date!

Well it wasn't that long ago that I received my new HTC TyTNII (aka AT&T Tilt, Kaiser, P4550 etc), and I remember sitting there as I unpacked the box looking in awe at my new device.

The very next morning - after the device had been fully charged - I found myself sitting at my desk and readying to surf the web in search of a high quality, efficient, durable, and aesthetically pleasing case for my new TyTNII... I know I don't want much (lol), but here it goes...

I should point out from the outset that there are a number of very good quality cases available on the market for Pocket PCs in general. The TyTNII comes equipped with a sensational slide out full qwerty keyboard and an awesome tilt screen. Whilst these features are among many of the features which make the TyTNII such a sought after device, these can also offer a challenge when it comes to searching for a protective case. One of the difficulties being finding a case that does not inhibit the use of this slide out keyboard and tilt screen. For example, it is not as easy or simple as finding a case for a 'candy bar' format device.

So... after having trolled the web in search of my high quality, efficient, durable, and aesthetically pleasing 'perfect' case, I stumbled across a website called Seidio (www.seidio.com).

The first thing that took my interest on the Seidio website was this case and case/holster combo unit that looked intriguingly different and it immediately caught my attention. What can I say...I was so intrigued by the look and description of the case... I bought it - in fact I bought the case/holster 'combo' pack.

I placed my order there and then over the net, and I was very impressed when the package arrived within 24 hours of the estimated arrival date.

I have been using the case and holster for two weeks now and would like to share my thoughts on it...

    The Case
When I first opened the package from Seidio I was intrigued to find the case in two separate halves. I mean, I had seen pictures of it on the internet - though was still intrigued by the 'split' nature of the case. The case is made up of two separate halves - a top half and bottom half. Each of these two halves have been moulded to perfectly (and I mean perfectly) fit the TyTNII. Both halves are constructed from quite thin yet highly durable hardened plastic (which forms the interior wall of the case), while the outside of the case has been coated in a rubberised 'film'. This rubberised film is almost identical in look and feel to the actual back of the naked TyTNII.

One of the great things about the rubberised coating on the case is that it allows for added grip while also being finger print proof - which is a great added bonus! Application and removal of the case is incredibly easy and can be done on the fly. Each of the two respective halves of the case have quite small plastic clips (or teeth) which clip onto the TyTNII. This is actually a very simple yet clever solution.

    Application of the Case:
I did say that this was incredibly easy... Simply slide the device so as to display the Qwerty keyboard, (I also found it helpful to also tilt the screen slightly). It makes no difference which half of the case you apply first as each half is autonomous of the other.

To apply the top half of the case, simply place the clip at the very top of the case over the top face (the end of the device with the built in camera) of the device... you will see the clip fit into place; then gently push the lower end of the case onto the device (the lower end of the device being the end with the call/end/etc buttons). The top half of the case will gently 'click' into place. The clips on the back half of the case are located on the left and the right hand sides of the mold. This means that the ONLY difference in the application of the back of the case and the front of the case is the direction of the application itself. To apply the back of the case, simply place the clips on the right hand side of the device... you will see the two clips fit into place; then gently push the left hand side of the case into place where you will see those two clips also fit into place. I hope that all makes sense... the one thing I can assure you is that the application of the case (both front and back) is a very simple process which involves little pressure and about 10 seconds of time. I mentioned earlier that I also found it helpful to tilt the screen slightly when applying the case, this just allows for 'clearer' access to all areas of the device and allows easier guiding of the clips into place.

You can purchase the case as a stand alone option... or you can bundle the case and the belt holster together for a total solution... while also getting a good deal on the bundled price : If you are thinking of purchasing the holster as well... here are a few thoughts...

    The Holster
The holster makes for a great solution for carrying your device with you, serves the purpose of further protecting your device and also and completes the total 'mobile case' solution. As with the case, the holster is made from strong polycarbonate to ensure robustness and durability. The holster has four main parts/aspects:

    The Interior:
This interior of the holster (ie: the interior of the back plate), is coated with a soft felt like material. This is a good addition to the holster as it serves the purpose of offering both cushioning and protection to the screen of the device when inserted face in... you can place the device in the holster face in or face out... but more on this later.

    The Bottom:
The bottom of the holster features a moulded area which is perfectly shaped to fit the TyTNII when in the case. This moulded area is only around 1cm deep, and only covers the two bottom corners - though is just right for allowing easy insertion and removal of the device from the holster while offering optimal protection. The moulded area also covers the micro SD slot for additional protection. The area of the device that is used for charging is deliberately left uncovered as this allows for the device to be charged while in the holster (ie: not having to remove the device for charging). The back sides of the device have moulded protection about half way up. Basically, the bottom area of the holster offers optimal protection while not compromising ease of use.

    The Back:
The back of the holster is again constructed from strong polycarbonate to ensure robustness and durability and delivers optimal protection. The back of the holster also features a 'swivel belt clip'. Now this is great! The locking swivel belt clip has seven rotating angles which allows for ideal positioning while sitting or standing. It is also made quite easy to apply and remove the holster from your belt (or handbag strap... as my wife would add).

    The Top:
The key to the holster is the top locking mechanism. This is where simplicity meets practicality. The locking mechanism is in the form of a spring clip which is lift rather than being 'dragged'. The process of lifting rather than 'dragging' allows for added longevity of the spring clip. One of the things I like most about the holster is that fact that the spring clip allows for easy one handed use (ie: insertion and removal of the device). I have found that inserting and removing the device is made even easier when the holster is worn in a landscape position. Attention to detail can make or break a good case, and so one thing I am impressed with is the small rubber strip that is housed in the underside of the spring clip. This rubber strip allows for a scratch free end result for the case... even after many hours of use.

The device can be placed in the holster face in or face out. My preference is face in so as to protect the screen. If you were a 'screen junkie' who always wants immediate access to your pda screen, then you can always opt to place the device with the screen facing outward.

One final point... I have deliberately put my TyTNII in the case and taken it out of the case, and put it in the case and taken it out of the case... and so on... on at least 30 occasions over the last couple of weeks. Why you may ask? I wanted to test the durability of the clips which hold the two halves of the case in place. I am pleased to say that there has been no change to the structural integrity of the clips nor the case as a result of these tests.

In summary... yes the Seidio Case and Holster combo is a great solution for the TyTNII... definitely one of the best I have used to date!

I said at the start of this overview, I went "in search of a high quality, efficient, durable, and aesthetically pleasing case for my new TyTNII".

So... did I find what I was looking for?

    Absolutely!
